On Friday January 20th 2017, with the help of North Carolina Congressman David Price, I was able to attend the Trump inauguration. The next day on my own I participated in the Women’s March on Washington. As a photographer at the inauguration, I had expected to see a kind of enthusiastic, gloating energy from Trump supporters, and to be able to document a different kind of joyful solidarity among participants of the Women’s March. But on these days – and especially at the Women’s March – I did not see many of the emotions I was expecting. Instead, I witnessed a sense of anxious foreboding, worry, fear, and confusion. I saw the ways in which each of us – even in a crowd of thousands of like-minded people - is ultimately caught up in our own thoughts and concerns, ultimately must face challenges with the inner strengths we possess alone.
